Stopped in here on the way to see Three Dog Night at Shooting Star Casino. When I walked in I was blown away by its beauty. It's a huge, gorgeous restaurant perched on Big Detroit Lake. Screened in outdoor patio is beautiful with old canoes as bookshelves and a gorgeous bar. Quite breathtaking to say the least. I see some here complaining about the price of the food. Yes, it's not bar food, you're going to pay steak and seafood dinner prices but I felt they were very reasonable. Huge wine list. Unfortunately we had a lousy experience. Our server who was super nice, got slammed by a huge group in another room and could barely get back to our table to get us more drinks and take our order. She basically ignored us all night. My husband had to walk in the bar and order drinks himself, and also walk into the dining room and inform the hostess we were ready to order. I think we sat for 1 1/2 hours before she took our dinner order. My beef isn't so much with her, but the DOOFUS "manager" on duty who had to have seen us rubber necking for close to 2 hours and did nothing! What exactly are your job duties dumb ass? Also, all the other servers on the patio area had to notice our empty glasses and the fact that we were the first seated and the only ones not eating or drinking! Why they couldn't have told the manager to check on us, or for our server to head over was disappointing. He never once walked by our table to check on us or the other guests. He just hung in main dining room and that was it . Very poor management skills. I ended up taking my walleye to go because it was getting close to show time and after writing a check for over $125.00 - somebody should have apologized and recognized the poor service we received but I guess they didn't care.

This place was okay, but was completely overpriced and underwhelming. Let me begin with the decor. We sat on the patio, which was lovely. It looked out on the water and was very comfortable. However, from there things went a bit downhill. The waitress was quite unfriendly, and didn't seem to have tried anything on the menu. Everything we asked about she said she had never had. That's your job! Jeez. It took at least 30 minutes to get our appetizer, which was decent. The dinners came out maybe 45 minutes later, and were generally okay. I had coconut shrimp, which were quite tasty, but were $26 for 5 measly shrimp. I thought the side dishes of creamed spinach, creamed corn, and Szechwan green beans were delicious, but didn't make up for the very high price. My mother's chicken pasta was not well received at all. The waitress had recommended it, having never tried it of course, because "we sell a lot of it." I'm not really sure why. My father had the mushroom ravioli, which was tasty, but was a tiny portion, especially given the very high price. I also thought they were extremely unconscientious. I ordered the green beans with no cashews because my sister has a nut allergy. When my sister ordered the cheesecake, the waitress did not bother to point out that the cheesecake was peanut butter. I mean, really. Put a little effort in. I think The Fireside gets away with average food at outrageous prices because there are very few nice restaurants in the area. It's really a shame.

Fireside is such a nostalgic place to visit. It's been around this town for a long time and they have the best service as well as an amazing view. Set on the lake with windows that make you feel like your right on the lake it's hard not to love this place. I go here every time I visit Detroit lakes. This last time we went Lydia was our server and she did everything with a smile and professionalism. She was one of the best servers we have ever had. The prime rib is always wonderful and the limoncello cake with blueberry sauce was divine. If you plan on going to Detroit Lakes, make a reservation for a table by the window and enjoy. This place is the best.

Came here 8 years ago and thought it was great. of all the seating option of outside is screened in to keep the monster Minnesota Mosquitos out. Beautiful sunset across the lake. Service was great and it should be as I'm the only one in here at 9 pm on a Tuesday night until 3 gals showed up. I should've went with my gut and ordered a steak but I ordered chicken something. It was ok but for the price I would've thought it'd be spectacular. Bread was a warm white bun like you find a Dickey's BBQ. Maybe in 7-8 years, I'll come back and get a steak.

Very enjoyable dinner on the lake with good food and good service. I would recommend this restaurant. I enjoyed a dinner of fillet steak with Yukon gold mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli along with a Moscow Mule to drink. The steak was well prepared and was a good cut. I ordered it medium well and it was closer to well done, but it was still mostly tender and flavorful. My wife enjoyed the linguine pasta. Overall the food was very good, the service and ambiance were great and we enjoyed our dinner. I wish the weather had been better because the view from the dining room would have been beautiful, but the lake was foggy that day. Dinner may have been a little overpriced, but I am still happy overall.

Our vacation visit to The Fireside for an early dinner was a delight. We sat in the screen porch section and had a lovely view of the lake. Our server was the equal of any of my favorites in Chicago: poised, friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. And the food was terrific! We came to the Fireside craving walleye. I grew up in the Northern Plains, and I love walleye -- fresh walleye, properly cooked. We were not disappointed. Both the batter-fried walleye (my favorite) and the sautéed walleye were scrumptious: simply prepared, tender, and fresh as could be. As with the service, the food was equal in quality to what I'd expect at a decent restaurant in Chicago. (The entrée prices looked like Chicago at first glance, too, but dinners include a substantial salad, so the meal offered good value for the quality.) The Harvest salad was delightfully fresh and well put together. For dessert, banana bread pudding was surprisingly light and flavorful. To top everything off, the wine list is very nice, with a nice variety by the glass and many good bottles at all prices points. I had a couple of minor quibbles: our entrées arrived well before we had finished our salads, and there were no espresso drinks. But overall, Fireside exceeded our expectations on every level. My only wish is that I lived closer than 600 miles away -- if I lived in the area, I'd likely be a regular...

I ate dinner at the Fireside on a recent visit to DL. I was craving walleye and they didn't disappoint. Dinner started off with a wonderful carrot ginger soup. It was thinner than I expected, but the flavors were great. The walleye was as good as I had hoped, and their choice of side dishes included grilled asparagus and the carrot ginger soup along with more typical sides. Service was good and the bartender made me a nice old-fashioned. You could go dressed up or in shorts and flip flops. Although this is a fairly classy place along the lake, I didn't feel the need to be dressed up.

I was visiting a college friend and he brought me to this restaurant. I had the crusted walleye, mac n cheese, and roasted tomatoes. It was amazing and by far the best meal I've had in a while. I can't tell you the last time I've had a craving for walleye! The atmosphere was nice and cozy and the service was friendly. It was a really great meal. I only wish it had been a little lighter so I could have seen the lake!

Great place for a steak. Reminded me of the supper clubs in Northern Wisconsin, but very upper end. We sat near the windows so you could see the lake at night. They start you with a bread basket and vegetable plate. The wine was good, steaks were great! WIll definately go again when in Detroit Lakes.

Great food in a beautiful setting. It is a little pricey, but it is the only restaurant of its caliber in Detroit Lakes. I had my wedding reception here, and the staff was wonderful. They tended to my every need. Wade, the manager, was particularly easy to work with. This is one of my top 10 favorite restuarants ever. Steaks are great, and the view is better.

The Fireside at a close glance appears to be an oasis in the culinary desert known as Detroit Lakes, MN; notice I said "appears". Perhaps the reason behind this... Disappointment (to say the least) stems from the stigma that is perceived by locals about the place. That being said, the Fireside does look and feel like a 3-4 star restuarant from the inside. Everything from the hardwood floors to the giant windows overlooking Detroit Lake gave off an upscale-esque vibe. The interior truly is beautiful, especially for a rural Minnesota dining facility. Now... Onto the most important part: The Food. The menu was sparse, not necessarily a bad thing, however after reviewing the menu for less than 2 minutes it became painfully clear that this place was just another "meat and potatoes" restaurant in another rural Minnesota town. Great. The entrée's ranged from steak, to more steak, freshwater fish, to even MORE steak. So as you probably guessed, I got steak. I ordered mine medium, as usual, for the sides I decided on the garden salad and hashbrowns. The salad came almost immediately, and by salad I mean iceberg lettuce with two tomatoes, a few carrots, and onions. Not exactly my definition of a salad, but hey it's just a salad. After around a half hour of waiting, the food was ready. I was actually slightly taken aback by thr first sight of my plate; the plate itself was far too large for the amount of food on it, but that's just at first glance. After cutting into the steak I realized that my clear order of "medium" was disreguarded and instead I was given "well done". Cool. To top it all off, the steak was under-seasoned, and the hashbrowns were just average hashbrowns you could get at Perkins. In fact, I'm 99% sure I could've gotten everything on my plate at Perkins, but instead of paying $10 for it there I paid the upwards of $30 at Fireside strictly for the atmosphere. Overall the Fireside is an okay establishment, especially for Detroit Lakes. I gave it 3 stars, but only because I do see potential for summer dining with a different dish. Like I stated earlier, the atmosphere is nice, and perhaps I just ordered too typical of an entrée. I will definitely be returning in the near future to find out, and I'm honestly hoping this next visit will change my mind. Till' Next Time Fireside.

I gave this restaurant a second chance, not sure why. The caprese appetizer was poor, my salad was dismal. It was missing ingredients that were listed on the menu. The asparagus I ordered came after everyone had finished eating. One would think a restaurant of this quality would comp as an apology. My Mom's food was lukewarm. The service was barely minimal. We had to ask for more coffee and it was most likely Folgers brand. I don't mind paying $$$ prices, but give us something for our money. My sister's shrimp was a very small portion. So sad because it is a great location.

I've only been here once, but the food and the service were impeccable. The menu has something to satisfy every taste, and it's great fun to eat with a view of the lake.
